The views on the way to Jasper were out of this world - blue
sky and beautiful mountains. Little did
we know that was all going to change in a very few miles.
We un-hitched the tow car in the campground
in what we thought was just overcast sky.
No it was smoke from the huge fire in Washington and Idaho. It was blowing in as we were driving to
Maligne Lake. We were here at 15 years
ago and everything was closed for the season, so we were planning on taking the
boat ride around the lake and experience the whole lake. It just wasn’t to be. The wind was really picking up and you
couldn’t even see across the lake and it wasn’t it’s beautiful blue color. Very disappointing.

On to Medicine Lake which is called the disappearing
lake. We had observed it on our way to
Maligne and we thought – boy is this lake really down. It reminded us of our reservoirs in
California only this is a natural phenomenon.

When we got to Maligne Canyon we saw where all of the water from the
lake was going. The water goes into
underground tunnels and comes out about 10-15 minutes later through the
canyon. The pictures just don’t capture
how deep this canyon is and then the water flows over the beautiful
waterfall. Really spectacular and loud.
