Tok and the Sourdough RV Campground

Our trip from Congdon Lake to Tok is one that Bernie (and I) will never forget.  We had heard about the roads being bad and we experienced it first hand for about 100 miles.  I still couldn’t drive, so  Bernie was stuck going about 20-30 miles per hour on patches of gravel, but mostly dirt with huge potholes.  We thought some of the roads in Mexico were bad, but this stretch was the worst ever.  We arrived at our destination The Sourdough RV campground in Tok about 3 hours later than we had planned.  Our good friend Yvonne Lewis had recommended this campground and we are so glad she did.  It had been sold since the Lewis’ were there, but a delightful young couple bought it and are keeping up all of the traditions. They have a small café attached to the office with a limited menu.  After doing all of our laundry and washing the motor home,  we decided that we would check out “Fast Freddy’s” the only restaurant in town.   On a Friday night the place was hopping with locals, construction workers and tourists.  Food was great, but we decided that we would check out the campground café for breakfast.  They are known for their sourdough pancakes and we were not disappointed.  We even had reindeer sausage – yummy!!!   We did get scolded for not attending the pancake toss the night before, but we assured them that we would be there that night.  After a day of sightseeing, grocery shopping, and checking out the local amusement park – Mukluk Land – (not open for the season yet) we decided to check out the limited menu at the cafe.  The BEST hamburger ever and spiral cut fries were to die for.  Our bellies full, it was off to the Sourdough Campground pancake toss and entertainment.  Much to our surprise Bernie won the toss which entitled him to a free breakfast.  He had to throw a real pancake into a bucket about 20 feet away.  Photo shows the winners.  Check out that smile.  The “camping” in Tok was great – I didn’t cook one meal.  Thanks Yvonne for the heads up on this one.
The little husky puppy was a real cutie.  Only 3 months old, but a real lady killer with those gorgeous blue eyes!!!
