Up bright and early and ready for race day after staying up
until 12:01 a.m. to see the fireworks over the harbor. Since there are only 3 hours of darkness they
do the fireworks in the middle of the night. Bernie watched them from the inside of his
eyelids. Of course, it was cloudy and
sprinkling when we got up but we decided to venture out and about and see what was going
on. We walked into town instead of
driving as there are cars, motor homes, campers, trailers and people everywhere. We arrived at the race start of the juniors
and got a front row place in front of the TV crew from Anchorage – a super nice
photographer that we chatted with before the start. She told us who to watch for, etc. Our neighbors in the campground have 2 daughters
running, so we watched for them as well.
We can’t believe that they can run up the mountain and back down so
fast, but a lot of them have been doing this for years and they train all
year. We saw the women’s start and
finish, but decided that we would watch the men’s race on TV. The winner of the juniors was the 2nd
place winner from last year and the winners of the women’s and men’s races were
both professional racers from Europe and they both broke the records.

#53 was the winner and #60 placed 2nd
Winner #53 looked like she could do the race all over again when she crossed the finish line
Did you guys get a chance to walk some of the course (outside of town) before or after the race? Looks like it was a tight race.
